About Dr Lowey
Dr. Tyler Lowey, a visionary force behind Kamloops Family Vision Clinic (KFVC), serves as both Optometrist and Owner since July 2, 2011. Born and raised in Kamloops, BC, Tyler’s connection to the clinic runs deep, having been a patient of the now retired Dr. Mario Pozza throughout his life.
Completing his Bachelor of Science in Cellular, Molecular and Microbiology at Thompson Rivers University in 2006 and his Doctor of Optometry in 2011, Tyler’s educational journey included enhancing his interest in glaucoma through clinics in Waterloo, ON, and New York City, NY. His experience in New York included working under a glaucoma specialist at the St. Albans VA Medical Center.
With a passion for eye health, Tyler’s optometric interests span myopia management, specialty contact lenses, ocular disease management, and refractive surgery co-management. This commitment to excellence is underscored by his inclusion in the Deans’ Honors List during his optometry studies.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Tyler is a proud father to his son, Oscar, and husband to his wife, Tammy. The unique bond with KFVC began during his summers working at the office, eventually leading to his recruitment by Drs. Pozza and Shamenski after graduation.
As an optometrist and owner, Tyler fosters a workplace that balances professionalism with a touch of chaos, creating a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere. His childhood aspiration to be a doctor, driven by the desire to wear formal attire, has transformed into a fulfilling role that incorporates continuous improvement.
Guided by the mantra “to be better than I was yesterday,” Tyler embodies a commitment to personal and professional growth. Sage advice received, such as “marry that girl you pushed home in a shopping cart,” has left a lasting impact on his life.
The most fulfilling aspect of Tyler’s role is the positive feedback from patients, providing a sense of accomplishment amid the uncertainties of some days. Noteworthy achievements include the joy of fatherhood and the hard work invested in reaching professional milestones.
Outside the clinic, Tyler’s interests range from cultural events like Ribfest to the annual rollercoaster ride of emotions courtesy of the Kamloops Blazers. A connoisseur of spicy foods, Tyler particularly enjoys Indian and Asian cuisine.
Beyond optometry, Tyler is a skilled cook, boasting a mean homemade mint chocolate chip ice cream. A literary enthusiast, the last book enjoyed was “Project Hail Mary” by Andy Weir, while the perennial favorite movie, “Anchorman,” graced Tyler’s university days.
Travel is a central hobby for Tyler, with Iceland standing out as the most memorable destination. Currently, the dream destination is Japan, reflecting an affinity for diverse cultures and experiences.
As a parent, Tyler navigates the uncharted territory of parenting while balancing fitness goals and pursuing personal interests whenever time permits. If granted a superpower for a day, Tyler would choose telepathy—an apt choice for someone deeply attuned to the needs and experiences of those around him.
